In this household network, we’ve prioritized Internet performance, security, and efficient management through segmented VLANs, accommodating IoT devices, surveillance cameras, and guest access.

We have employed a sophisticated approach to optimize Internet Performance and Stability within a household comprising six residents. Recognizing the presence of a variety of Internet of Things (IoT) devices in the home, we have prioritized network security to ensure the safety and optimal functionality of the network.

To address these requirements, we have implemented a multi-tiered network design that encompasses separate VLANs tailored to specific IoT device categories in addition to the existing ones:

Management VLANs: These VLANs have been specifically created to oversee the administration and control of various IoT devices within the household. By segregating these devices into specialized VLANs, we ensure efficient network management and security control, enhancing the overall performance of these devices.

Camera CCTV VLAN: A dedicated VLAN has been established to accommodate the household’s surveillance cameras and the infrastructure associated with them. This separation not only enhances the security of the camera system but also optimizes network performance for this specialized application.

IoT Device VLANs: Recognizing the diverse range of IoT devices within the household, we have introduced individual VLANs for different categories of IoT devices. This segmentation allows us to group similar devices together, ensuring efficient management and heightened security. For example, Smart Home Automation VLAN, Smart Appliances VLAN, and Smart Entertainment VLAN.

Guest VLAN: The Guest VLAN is a critical component of our network design. It is intended to isolate guest devices from the household network to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive data and smart devices. Guests are prohibited from accessing any smart devices within the household, thus safeguarding data privacy and network security. Nevertheless, we have implemented flexible protocols to selectively grant guests access to specific IoT devices as desired by the homeowners, maintaining both security and convenience.

This comprehensive approach not only guarantees the safety and security of the household’s network but also ensures high-performance connectivity for all IoT devices. The segmentation of VLANs for various IoT device categories allows for efficient management and heightened security. The controlled guest access further enhances the flexibility of the network while maintaining the integrity of the household’s security measures.
